Barely March - Marely Barch

Barely March is the solo project of Long Island's Chris Keough. It's been lumped in with the Pop Punk tag, that irritates me so much. As soon as people see that label, they imagine baggy shorts and a sort of robotic vocal which makes them run for the hills. Don't get me wrong, there is some of that in the genre, but a lot of isn't and that deserves far greater attention.

Better Days is a wonderful Acoustic strum about not feeling sorry for yourself which includes a banjo riff and a splendid keyboard solo. Thinking Emoji lives on a killer riff and Corduroy could be Glasgow 1986. The killer song though is Nervous As I'll Ever Be which is just so damn addictive.

What makes the album so astounding is that it was recorded on a laptop in a fortnight. Amongst, the ten songs is a cover of Bonus Oceans and I suppose that's apt, because there's a lot of similarities to Jeff Rosenstock here. Forget the Pop Punk label, the album is at Name Your Price, so what have you got to lose?

You can listen to and buy the album here.
