Big Loser - Love You, Barely Living

New Jersey's Black Numbers is a fine Punk and Hardcore label and hopefully their reach will be extended by the addition of Austin Texas's Big Loser, a more mainstream roster addition. Although thrown in with the Pop Punk / Emo brigade, Big Loser have the potential to hit a much wider audience.

Although Love You, Barely Living still have those Pop Punk roots showing, particularly on the likes of Beautiful Dark Room and Barely Living, the album has a College Rock feel to it. It is more in Menzingers or Berwanger territory.

Chase Spruiell can certainly conjure up a fine turn of phrase and his vocal drawls wonderfully as though he is storytelling and the resulting songs are really effective, great hooks and choruses. The closer, Denouement  is built around a fantastic riff. and that fights with Blisters to be the best song on the album.

The lyrics are dark, all about boredom and drunk sozzled, but the instrumentation is incredibly upbeat, almost along Power Pop lines/ Love You, Barely Living is a fine listen, far more rounded than you would expect. I love it!

You can listen to and buy the album here.
