Cheerleader - Almost Forever
It is hard to define the Cheerleader sound, somewhere between Dream and Synth Pop probably is the nearest. I've seen the Philadelphia band compared to Beach House, maybe because of the Producer connection. But although I can hear why, there isn't the irritating twee of Beach House here.
This is mainly due to the arrangements and the tone and if anything sweetness of Joe Haller's vocal. Where as their 2015 debut album was lauded in many quarters, Almost Forever takes a different route, the pop is far more upfront.
At times, I'm reminded of OMD without the chorus strength or even mid 80s Sparks, think With All My Might. Cheerleader become even more interesting when they divert and a song like the title track borders on Psychedelic.
Everyone's Wearing Skin is wonderfully moody splendid Synth Pop bordering on an Eno Soundtrack. Even a simpler song such as Things We Regret stands out with the instrumental hooks. The stand out here is Domestica with it's driving bassline and synth riff. This second album has been a long time coming, but it has been well worth the wait.
You can listen to and buy the album here.
