Mean Sea - Trust Us We Know

I've been fortunate to have been able to listen to this 6 Track EP for a while and it has been on constant repeat. The Baltimore Trio have conjured up an absolute treat. I suppose you would call it Indie Rock, but that doesn't cover half the story.

Every second counts. Although you suspect that their heart is in Surf Rock due to the licks that regularly jump in and dominate the magnificent Idiota Blanco. But elsewhere, they venture into Power Pop and even Prog and Pop Punk..

Everything is coated in melody and riffs, but others can do this, although not as regularly as I would like. Mean Sea's strength is the unusual unexpected lyrical couplets such as "There'll be a little more. Just To Be Sure."

If there is a better song recorded this year than Puke Mouth, I haven't heard it and the inbox effect after it was played on the IDHAS 10 Song Mix seem to underline that. Workhorse demonstrates how melodic a Power Trio can be, a hint of 80s Indie, but more 90s College Rock and even UK New Wave.

For all of the intensity and pace, the slowed down Should've Stayed In Bed is equally wonderful. Magnificently understated, you sense it would have been easy to break out into the noisier stuff they are so adept at. The fact that they don't is commendable.

Then there is You're In My Thoughts which is possibly the tour de force. A talky verse leads into a prototype Prog Pop, that the likes of Rush mastered in their latter days. Please Swim Back has a poptastic chorus with a hint of The Police in the verse and a dash of Surf Guitar. Highly Recommended doesn't really do justice to how great Trust Us We Know Is.

You can listen to and buy the EP here.
