23 Days Break - Bipolar Opposite

I've seen the Bristol Trio 23 Days Break described as Punk or Pop Punk, I don't hear any of that here. This is a great Guitar Pop sound that resides somewhere between Power Pop and UK New Wave. Boy do we need it, the likes of The Speedways and Emperor Penguin have needed the company for too long.

This is a trio built on Power, but able to be 3 Dimensional. For instance Letter at times gives of a vibe of The Police, but then explodes and adds in a killer Guitar solo. Drifting kicks off with a gripping melodic riff which isn't actually a million miles away from The Speedways.

Then there is Motorwise which instrumentally is very Motorhead and Cure You instrumentally has a real errrrrrrrrr Cure vibe. The riff count is off the scale here, never more so than on Mistake which is new wave Joy with a hint of a heavier version of The Jam.

The Trio rarely come up for air, briefly maybe on The Same and still the chorus rocks out with a touch of Prog in feel. You do get the impression that the band are happiest with 1 2 3 4 songs and they do them so well but the variation on show is also impressive.

I would bet these chaps are a thrilling Live Act taking me back to my club gig attending debut in 1979. They are locked as a trio, both the incredible rhythm section and the stunning riffs are admirable. Some of those riffs will rattle your teeth.

23 Days Break are loud and proud, but always melodic. It is a while since I was so rocked up. I suppose I've been listening to too much gentler pop choruses. There is hidden complexity in the writing, many of the riffs border on Prog, something you don't necessarily notice on first listen. Highly Recommended!

You can listen to and buy the album here.
