We are seemingly having a Tour Of Europe by following Italy with Belgium. Well we have to keep in touch here in the Brexit self imposed hell that is the UK. The quartet are big in Belgium, but look on the net and try to find anything about them over here and there is tumbleweed.
I remember the stir that Norman created on here leading to an IDHAS album of the year and I had the same reaction to this quartet on hearing their third album here. There is an Indie Guitar joy to what they do. almost mid 90s, but with an ability to venture further as and when they feel like it.
The riffs come unexpectedly from everywhere, but they are usually angular. For instance Afraid To Go Home is a little Weezer when they were good and not some manufactured modern pop experiment. Yet Help I'm Going sane is more Franz Ferdinand go Power Pop.
Then there is the moodiness of the atmospheric Alarms which comes in at over sixminutes. You keep waiting for it to explode and when it does in the last minute and a half, it is magnificent in a Radiohead sort of way. But compare that to the riff laden Indie Guitar Pop of No and you realise the talent that is on show here.
Roman Numerals is wonderfully Indie with an early XTC vibe crossed with a much recent Guitar wave. There is an 80s like Rush riff on Idiot Paradise with a New Wave vibe that just hooks you. It is everything that you wish an Indie Guitar led Pop song to be.
Dirk. are a proper united band, not four individuals and even more than on their two excellent previous albums, they nail it completely here. The UK is experiencing a revival of Guitar bands, most a bit bleh. None of them are a patch on this lot. Totally Splendid!
You can listen to and buy the album here.
