Crayola Eyes - Gushing

We've covered artists from around the world, never Jakarta though, but now we have. The six piece Indonesian outfit gently take over your senses across the 8 songs of their debut. You describe them loosely as Psych Pop, but this isn't about choruses and more about the soundscape.

The basic template is late 60s Psych, but they ease into Shoegaze and even 80s Indie. The vocal approach is two fold too. An Ian Brown Stone Roses feel when the Vocals are in the background which at times comes across as Ozric Tentacles with a singer.

This is most relevant on Blacker Than Coal which adds a  hypnotic synth riff partway through. Then there are the songs when the vocal is way up front and the songs appear much more modern. Today's News, Tomorrow's Films which has a Primal Scream vibe and sounds like the slower number on a Brit Pop album.

Crayola Waves is a wonderful example of (modern) Psych, but there is a middle album pair of songs that take the album into a different direction. Love Traffic is very 80s and has a shared male / female vocal. Pocket Moon is the poppiest of all on show here, a melodic joy that verges on Space Rock.

The sound across the whole album is absolutely hypnotic, it grips you to your seat and allows you to clear your mind and allows the listen to be the be all and end all. It is a soothing but enthralling listen. I'd love to know where the band get their influences from.

You can listen to and buy the album here.
