I've described Singing Lungs in previous reviews as Smoking Popes with a Power Pop Beat and noisy enough to appear on Rum Bar. Both still apply in parts, but this, their second album, feels even more melodic and at times steps into the territory of The Lemonheads, maybe even Husker Du.
Don't get me wrong, the quartet are not any less noisy, they just don't come up for air, but that rowdiness seems more focussed which is largely due to the Power Pop Riffs which just grip you to the core. It Gets Better, for instance is pure Power Pop.
Unlike others in this essentially land of Indie Rock, there is great emphasis on choruses and that marks them out from other meandering peers. Everything is at pace, but never shouty and although there isn't masses of variation, fans and like minded listeners wouldn't necessarily want that.
You find your feet tapping unexpectedly and you can imagine how well these songs translate Live. Where I'm At is very late 70s UK New Wave with a killer riff, The addition of Laura Stevenson on Around Again adds weight to the Power Pop comparisons.
There is so much to like about the band, underlined by the fact that we have reviewed them three times. Static even adds producer Rick Johnson on Theremin, an instrument that should be used more and more in popular music, ask Blake Jones. A focussed shake your fist and sing along affair like this needs and deserves greater attention,
