Moon Under Water - Some Of Us Were Islands

 

Moon Under Water are Singer Songwriter, Michael Bloss and Drummer, Adam Newton, currently based in Berlin. Some Of Us Were Islands is a little different to the riff led Pop Rock that we are generally known for, but it is just as satisfying.

The album is a soundscape that is best listened to all the way through. It isn't an instrumental album, but the arrangements of the songs suit this one listen suggestion. I listened to the songs at random, but then I listened a couple of times straight through and you get what the duo are trying to achieve much more clearly.

There are great individual songs, but the mix of genres instrumentally cover everything from Indie Pop to Prog. There is a mellow 80s feel to proceedings generally, but the arrangements allow the album to breathe into the likes of Folk and the Symphonic Rock of say Alan Parsons Project.

Yet there is also great Pop. Green Around The Gills is in Deacon Blue territory, splendidly so, but then you have About To Be which is Eno-esque and chilled, almost ambient. Across the album, you hear great Piano Pop and then something with a vocal that could be Andy Bell.

Low Spirits is moody and melancholic, yet Autumn Mirror is like a cross between A-ha and Runrig. Safety First is a magnificent arrangement, very Celtic, very Folk, very engaging. Some Of Us Were Islands may not be your normal listen, but give it a try, you will be surprised at how the album grips you.
