Gaz Hunter - Lysergic Soundscapes Of Dreamadelica

Willington's Gaz Hunter offers up an outstanding album It is hard to believe that this is a one man band as the album sounds so joined up and group like. People will infer from the title that this is a Psych album or at the very least Psych Pop.

Well you would be very wrong. Yes the Psych is here, but there's more of a Pop Rock feel at times. Indeed, Good Things Will Happen To Good People is very close to Power Pop, the chorus certainly is, it even has a classic Power Pop drum pattern. Add in a splendid Guitar Solo and you have as much as you could want.

This Pop Rock comparison is largely due to Hunter's vocal which is unlike anything expected around this genre. Chasing Rainbows In The Sun could be the Alan Parsons Project, his voice is very much in that territory throughout.

Elsewhere, A Long Long Time is a great mix of Space Rock and Psych, whilst Hypnotised By Patterns has a 60s Beat verse and a Rock and Roll chorus. For all this charming melody, the album is anchored on two much more expansive pieces.

The closer, Give Me All Your Love revs up into an absolute Rock Out. The extended Guitar break is wonderful, very Mid Seventies, Pink Floyd. The song then changes focus completely with Dave Gilmour sort of turning into Scotty Moore. If this isn't mind blowing enough, it is bettered by Elless Dee.

There is so much in this magnificent six minutes. It starts with a flute and merges into Modern Prog. Half way through there is a blistering Rock Guitar Solo which dominates the second half into a Space Rock freak out close. All this and a massive chorus, the song is riveting.

On first looking at this, I thought Lysergic Soundscapes Of Dreamadelica would be interesting. It is much more than that. Incredibly Inventive. This is a stormer. You can listen to and buy the album here. It is also available on CD, another bonus.
