Peter Hall - About Last Night

Peter Hall's debut album, Light The Stars was in the IDHAS Best Albums Of The Year, hitting the Top 40. You can read the review here. About Last Night continues and builds on that success with an outstanding Singer Songwriter offering.

Everybody these days wants immediacy in their music, great today, forgotten tomorrow. when I've always felt that the songs that stay with you far longer are the ones that stand repeated listens, growing more and more until you realise that this may be with you forever.

About Last Night is also an ideal example of how great the album format still is. We don't need to be bombarded with playlists when a complete listen to the work of one artist's work leaves us far more fulfilled. This is an album that does just that, it is Pop Rock of the highest quality.

Hall's gentle vocal isn't that suited to the up and at 'em, so the concentration is on beautifully arranged melodic joy, splendidly sung with a chorus hook. This gentleness doesn't mean the songs are boring with killer guitar solos on the likes of Waiting For Nothing and the superb Nothing Happens.

There is also room for the upbeat Click Your Fingers, a real jaunty melodic joy of a song with additional fine vocal harmonies. The title track opens proceedings with a Jangle and a hook that just grabs you. Both of these songs are highlights.

However the real star of the show is the awesome The Autumn Stone. A really moody melancholic belter of a song that adds a lounge, almost jazz instrumental interlude. It is like heartbreak put to music. About Last Night is the finest example of how quality out bids all. Highly Recommended!

You can listen to and buy the album here.

I Don't Hear A Single Albums Of The Year 2021 : 31-40

It's been difficult to get these choices down to 100. I'm also not a believer in saying one album is better than another. Most of the time you are comparing Apples To Oranges. I'm not a List person, I just think what's the point?

However, for the last few years I have compiled annual Best Of 's  because these posts seem so popular and the aim of this Blog is to get exposure (and Sales) for the artists. There is no meaning or judgement on an album that is Number 1, Number 100 or not on the list. Anything that I review on here, mention on Social Media or play on the Radio Show is as highly recommended.

There are few rules. All albums have to have been reviewed on IDHAS. Reissues and Live Albums are not included. Previously unreleased albums are included, but Best Of's are not. For each album, I've posted a song from it and a link to the IDHAS Review where you can find further details and how to listen or buy the album.

Peter Hall - Light The Stars

It has been a while since Peter Hall's EP on the excellent The Beautiful Music and that time gap may help explain how great his debut album sounds. Wonderfully produced, with big arrangements and seemingly a key to the musical instrument cupboard.

As well as the sound, the songs are immaculate. Nottingham hasn't had an easy time in recent years and combing this with the lockdown may explain the lyrics. Peter Hall masters making sad songs so damn chirpy, I can only think of Paul Heaton in a similar category.

Not that Hall's material is similar to Heaton's. There isn't the social comment here and this is a little more easy listening here. The slower songs edge towards the likes of Al Stewart. Yet when the pace picks up, the Pop Rock can match anything around.

Light The Stars is a real Singer Songwriter's album and then there is Hall's voice which melts you away. It is hard to believe that this is a debut album as accomplished as it. So much effort has gone into every song that I couldn't think of any way to improve it.

Light The Stars has a stunning arrangement to close it, jaw dropping and Anything At All sounds like a big Abbey Road number. One Last Day just aches beauty. But is the Pop that blossoms most. Save Yourself is great 70's Pop Rock, more than a little jangly.

Firefly may even better it, very Nick Frater territory, an epic listen. Hall is great at the slow verse leading into the massive chorus. The structure and instrumentation here is absolutely top notch. Great Songs, Great Artist, Great Album!

You can listen to and buy the album here. I would particularly recommend the wonderfully presented CD package.
