Mothboxer - Twelve

One of the bands that have defined I Don't Hear A Single are Mothboxer. When I talk to people about IDHAS, which is getting rarer these days due to the monster that it has become for me personally, Mothboxer are mention. Now we have, as the title suggests, the 12th album in a career that has defined by quality.

Dave Ody's materiaƂ has never lacked depth, but Twelve feels even deeper. There is the same melody led feel, massive choruses that underline the melody and catchiness of Mothboxer's Pop Rock credentials, but at times the songs venture further into territory that Ody has only trod one foot in previously.

Changes can be noted on repeated listens. The Keyboard cupboard has been opened, but the content is tastefully used. These are not the plinking plonking 80s version of the instrument, but more the 60s and 70s versions.

Ody has always described his music as Progressive Power Pop and Maybe It's Just Me is certainly wonderful Power Pop, but after earlier days when the Power Pop was more upfront, I've thought him more Progressive Pop Rock.

The addition of extra keyboards may seem strange to avid listeners, bearing in mind the quality of his Guitar playing. But there is plenty of Guitar here and the keyboards are vital to the directions that he takes here. They also don't detract from the songs in any way.

The directions taken include Neo Prog, Classic Rock of the 70s, but there are also big parts that feel 60s. There is also Space Rock in which, he seems at his best. But fear not, the Psych Pop and late Beatle-esque Guitar Pop that has always been a strength are still around in spades.

There is the funkiness of the verse on Give It A Try that breaks into a Sunshine Pop chorus. Crazy Anyway gets all Pink Floyd and None The Wiser is pure Brit Pop mixed with 60s Beat. Dumber By The Day even gets a little Stealers Wheel and When The Lights Go Out is great 70s Pop Rock mixed with a Prog feel.

Then there is the 13 minute closer that is How Does It Feel? A song that encapsulates everything that Mothboxer are about. Raiding multi genres, through heavy and light and yet never losing touch with the harmony and melody in its magnificence. Mothboxer's best album yet? Possibly but that might denigrate the previous 11.

You can listen to and buy the album here. You can buy the CD here.

Here Is The News

It has been a while, largely because there hasn't been so much. But over the past week, it has come flooding in.  The theme is largely about the return of IDHAS heroes.

Mothboxer - Twelve

Hot on the heels of February's Timelimes album (IDHAS Review here) Dave Ody is proving especially prolific this year, on fire really. 26 July will mark the release of a second album for 2024. Ody started recording after the release of Timelines.

Having heard the album, it is top notch. You know that Mothboxer never let you down, but the new one is simply wonderful. Look out for the nigh on 13 minutes closing track How Does It Feel. The album is called Twelve, being errrr Mothboxer's 12th album.

Look out for further details and updates here and here.

Caddy - Someone Like You

There`s a 20 year anniversary for Caddy this year and Tomas Dahl wanted to write and record a new album for the occasion. The self titled album will be released on vinyl through Vestkyst Records and CD through Kool Kat. Release date is 22 August.

2023 was pretty rough for Dahl with losing both parents and two close friends within a period of 6 months.. The album is lyrically darker reflecting on those events,  The music is still very much melodic but there is much more Power on this album than in a long time, but the results from our Power Pop hero are outstanding.

A single has been released and you can listen to Someone Like You below. The song will also be included on next week's Listening To This Week Playlist from Monday 15 July.

The Mommyheads - One Eyed Band

I think many of you know our love of The Mommyheads. We have been fans forever and ever amen. It has been wonderful to see the band in full flow over recent years with more Live shows than ever. We have seen the following grow and grow and still consider them as possibly our favourite band ever.

A new album, One Eyed Band, will be released on 13 September and I know we can be biased, but it is truly magnificent. The tracklist is below. Look out for further details on the band's website here and Bandcamp site here.

Album Details :

01 Chicken Soup

02 Life Is A Dream

03 Season Of Our Sound

04 Architect

05 Human Being

06 Risk It All

07 One Eyed Man

08 Weightless And Unbound

09 Junk

10 The Gift

Derrero - Breezing Up

It is hard to believe that I have been a fan of Welsh Wizards, Derrero for 29 years. Through Brit Pop and Beyond. No one quite catches the mood like their albums do. So it is delightful to note that Derrero's sixth studio album, Breezing Up, will be released on 14 September.

The bulk of the album was recorded last October at Palm Tree Studios in Kent and features contributions from Dewi Parry (Ghosts Lawns, Siula) and Gid Goundrey (Gulp, Ghost Lawns, EYE) with additional brass from Ifan Rhys & Rob Halcrow.

Derrero have maintained a resolutely DIY and esoteric approach to music making cementing their reputation as a strident and confident band who remain steadfastly unafraid to swim against the tide and self-release uncompromising music outside of the mainstream
.
Breezing Up will be preceded by a single on 02.08.24 from when the album will be available for pre-order. The tracklisting is as follows :

01 Ride On Rider
02 Catherine
03 The Drive Home
04 A Line In Space
05 Breezing Up
06 Cosmic Shift
07 Painting With Sound
08 Mile After Mile
09 Creepy Crawlies

Cherry Fez - Superexcited Sessions

It is an exciting time for Todd Shuster this year. Firstly, he has recorded an EP in Nashville with Brad Jones. The results are exhilarating and all four songs will delight Power Pop fans. The first track from those sessions has been released and you can listen to it below.

There may be more songs recorded later in the year and here's hoping a label will pick them up for a Physical Release as either an EP or mini album. Superexcited (the song) will also appear on next week's Listening To This Week Playlist (15 July).

In the meantime, the excellent Subjangle label is releasing a double CD compilation of Todd's old band, The Impossible Years called A Good Past Deserves Repeating. Provisional Release Date is 14 July. More details as I have them.

Finally Cherry Fez will be playing some IPO’s as Rick Kingo Featuring Cherry Fez at LA, San Diego, Vancouver and New York). It is great chance to see Rick and Chris from Caper Clowns with Cherry Fez. I am quite envious. IPO Details can be found here.

The Junipers - Annie Almond

On the theme of returning heroes, there was a real Wow! hollow when we found out that The Junipers  were returning. First up is the wonderful single that is released on Thursday (11 July). Called Annie Almond, it is as ace as you would expect.

A follow up single is initially planned for 1 August titled She Looked Up At the Stars. Even more exciting is the news that a new album is ready, provisionally planned for a release at the end of August. The album is likely to be called Imaginary Friends.

The You Tube embed for Annie Almond is below.  It will not go live until after midnight on Thursday. Listening To This Week fans can also hear the single on next Monday's LTTW (15 July).

Chris Church Underground Again

Chris Church is currently finishing off his latest album, some of which I have heard and those songs are top notch as ever. In the meantime, Chris has released the song, Underground Again. The definitive version of this song has eluded him, but he has always loved it.

This version is newly recorded in spring 2024, with Brian Beaver, friend and bandmate from DANG on Drums. Brian also painted the picture in this cover photo. Church wrote the song in the late '90s. A different version of it was recorded with THE FREDS several years ago.

That version is titled "Fad Collectible" (first track on THE FREDS album "Heavens For Betsey"). Finally set free with no final mix or mastering. it is Church's final attempt at the song and well worth a listen.

The Glad Machine - So High

Finally, a most welcome return from The Glad Machine. It has been a couple of years since the excellent Hey album which featured heavily in our Best Albums Of 2022. You can read the IDHAS Review of that album here.

Suiting the season, if not the weather over here in the UK. A great blast of catchy Power Pop joy. Brad Thayer still has a fine set of pipes. We can't wait to hear more from the band.

Mothboxer - Timelines

There may be a time that I run out of things to say about Dave Ody's Mothboxer. In the review of Breathe, the last album, I jokingly referred to Mothboxer being one of our Teacher's Pet. But it is down to the quality and progression. Every album builds on the last and any appearances here are more than worthy.

We started the Best 100 Albums, two years in with 2018 and every Mothboxer album released since then has appeared in the 100. There isn't a loyalty card, every offering since then has been consistently Top Notch and even bands that I continue to love forever can't match that.

Ody has always had an ability to write and perform such melodic catchy songs whilst crossing genres at will. Essentially Pop Rock, Mothboxer tread Power Pop, Psych Pop, even a little Prog and Alt Rock, but everything is so damn toe tapping.

Timelines feels like his poppiest so far, if anything more than a little 80s Pop Rock. Having said that, probably the best song is all 60s Mellotron riddled. That being the Beatles 68 Psych Pop of All Over The World.

No Warning, No Sign is the trademark 70s Pop Rock that Mothboxer specialise in. However what starts off as a sort of Gerry Rafferty backed by Liverpool Express breaks out into a cross between Neo Prog and Space Rock, total melody across all parts..

Sound Of Nothing even goes full on Melodic Modern Prog with its hypnotic riff. This Song is almost happy clappy, a stripped down let's do the show right here sort of thing. Space in-between is almost Lounge Pop.

Mothboxer are best when it gets Epic and I don't think Ody has ever been more epic than on the approaching 7 minutes closer The Wrong Sky. It even adds a big Sci Fi Soundscape ending. Ody is a wonderful guitarist and part way through, I thought "ooh there's not a lot of Guitar here" and it is like I was overheard as the album from then on is Guitar Heaven.

There is a loose concept theme to Timelines and it's funny that I was thinking of ELO's Time as I listened. It doesn't have that level Pop or the treated vocal nonsense, but it has a slightly similar 80s style big production. Absolutely Splendid! Mothboxer may finally get the recognition that is deserved.

You can listen to and buy the album here.

Mothboxer - Breathe

We are more Door Openers of the new to us here, but there are some Teacher's Pets who never ever let us down. I'm thinking of the likes of The Mommyheads, Ex Norwegian, The Orange Peels, Chris Church, Spygenius, Mothboxer and quite a few more.

These bands don't get special treatment. If they released a mediocre album, it wouldn't be covered. But they never do. In many cases, they don't release the same album twice. We also know what they are about, so can spot anything that isn't spot on. But we never do.

Dave Ody's Mothboxer are splendid. Albums are beautifully arranged and genre bending at times without ever losing sight of the melody and wherever possible offer up a chorus to kill for. Breathe feels a little different. To my ears, it sounds the poppiest they've ever been.

Riffs and melody lines are everywhere, the vocals are much more upfront and some of the solos are magnificently jaw dropping, Mick Ronson-esque at times. The depth of the harmony led songs catches you by surprise. So let me tell you about some of the songs.

I have a theory that when the word California is in the title of a song, it will be a winner. It certainly is here. It is great 70s Pop Rock, nearest to 10CC probably. It is great piano pop that, unlike some slower songs on great albums, never stays in one place.

Led By Clowns mirrors John Miles with a great Glam Rock Riff. No Ones Joking goes Electronic with a twee keyboard hook, but Ody cannot resist adding a massive Psych Pop like chorus to it. There is much more Piano on the album than usual, but only to enhance the Pop.

When I Had All The Time is a magnificent big ballad. adorned by an adorable Baroque Pop accompaniment. An arrangement that is a little Peter Skellern without the Brass. All The Things has a real "all together now" with a vocal interlude that could be on Roy Wood's Mustard and a killer guitar solo. Free Ride opens the album with a splendid urgency.

As with all Mothboxer albums, the excellence usually surrounds one particular gobsmacking song. It could have been California here, but even that is out trumped here by the sheer wonder of Operator. If you are a Pop Rock admirer, then this song is the finest example.

I get excited by any new Mothboxer album and you rarely get much advance notice that they are about to appear. But everything here is bigger, the sound, the riffs, the harmonies and the melody. Ody has never sung better and seems to have a bigger gloss on the Guitar solos, never that long, but particularly gripping. Breathe is an absolute masterclass.

You can listen to and buy the album here or here.

I Don't Hear A Single Albums Of The Year 2021 : 11-20

It's been difficult to get these choices down to 100. I'm also not a believer in saying one album is better than another. Most of the time you are comparing Apples To Oranges. I'm not a List person, I just think what's the point?

However, for the last few years I have compiled annual Best Of 's  because these posts seem so popular and the aim of this Blog is to get exposure (and Sales) for the artists. There is no meaning or judgement on an album that is Number 1, Number 100 or not on the list. Anything that I review on here, mention on Social Media or play on the Radio Show is as highly recommended.

There are few rules. All albums have to have been reviewed on IDHAS. Reissues and Live Albums are not included. Previously unreleased albums are included, but Best Of's are not. For each album, I've posted a song from it and a link to the IDHAS Review where you can find further details and how to listen or buy the album.

Mothboxer - On The Flip Side

I do listen to a lot of Pop Rock, so I think I'm allowed an opinion on it. It covers such a wide area (not as wide as Indie of course) that when an album hits the spot of many, a mass of artists tend to follow it until it becomes tedious. It's happened with Beach Boys wannabes, Jellyfish wannabes, Teenage Fanclub wannabes.

So when you know an artist who follows a path without ever trying to be anyone else, mastering a sound that never changes drastically, but does just enough to make you excited when a new release is on the horizon, they should be treasured. Dave Ody is one such man.

There may be an artist that I've covered more on I Don't Hear A Single, but I can't think of one. The Mothboxer albums are just superb. I'm not one for saying that I don't understand why a band aren't massive. Big sales doesn't mean big quality as I learned from a particular battering I got on a Duran Duran Facebook Group. Everyone there knew their sales numbers. But Mothboxer should be much much bigger.

Mothboxer's 9th full length album has everything that you would want on a Mothboxer album, but, as always, goes further. There seems to be more keyboards present, but worry not, these are not Rick Wakeman like. The keys tastefully enhance the songs in an unobtrusive way.

Indeed, the Organ Run on Living It Up is magnificent and complements a pacey 60's Beat Songs. These keys aren't everywhere nor on every song, but they do make a surprising addition to the quality of the songs. On The Flip Side is just chocka with great melodic Pop Rock.

There's so much going on Be Out Here Forever, it is like three or four songs in one with the style changes. It starts off all Gerry Rafferty and ends as a real 60s all together now. On Repeat has wonderful multiple harmonies followed by the second epic of the album, Push Me In The Water which is an Alice In Wonderland type of effect.

Hidden From Me is very Pop Rock 70s, the type of direction that Nick Frater takes. Never Been Gone is almost Jazz in feel and 10CC in sound. Lost And Found goes all Blue Mink. This is the most varied Mothboxer album yet. It still covers the area somewhere between 60's Pop and 80's Intelligent 80's Indie, but offers two massive songs that fully revel the talent of Dave Ody. Highly Recommended!

You can listen to and buy the album here. It is £5 for heaven's sake. well worth opening your purses. You can find out more about Mothboxer here.

I Don't Hear A Single Albums Of The Year 2020 : 41-50

It's been difficult to get these choices down to 100. I'm also not a believer in saying one album is better than another. Most of the time you are comparing Apples To Oranges. I'm not a List person, I just think what's the point.

I would also add that the Top 100 includes albums available as Download Only. To suggest that they are anything less than equal to a Physical release is grossly unfair, even more so in 2020 with all that has happened during the year. To qualify, an album has to be available for sale in any format.

For each album, I've posted a song from it and a link to where you can find further details on how to listen or buy the album.

Mothboxer - Accelerator

I Don't Hear A Single has been a been a long time admirer of Dave Ody's Mothboxer. The emphasis of a Mothboxer Album is always great Pop Rock. Songs feature unusual arrangements combined with big choruses and some stunning playing. Accelerator is no exception. It is a fine new album with a tad more emphasis on the Pop this time round.

You can read Mick's 2018 IDHAS Interview with Dave here. I also asked Dave if he would give us a track by track rundown of Accelerator and I'm delighted to say he agreed. You can listen to and buy the album (at a bargain price) here.

Accelerator:

"This was inspired lyrically after a particularly horrific drive back from London one day.. Sat Nav app was being very efficient (it thought) by taking me off the beaten track and through single track lanes in pitch black to avoid the motorway congestion!

Not the most rock and roll of lyrical themes, but I figured most people can relate to this :) - Musically this came together pretty quickly. I’d named the album before writing this one but “Accelerator” slotted very nicely into the chorus hook."

Feel Something:

"Got a little dark on this one - seems to approach the day to day struggle we all have balancing work/life. I try not to make lyrics too whiny usually. Hence the opening line of “Don’t mean to complain”"

Long Time Coming:

"This started life as an instrumental  - Tried many different approaches vocally before landing on the version presented here. I’ll be honest, this didn’t feel like a traditional Mothboxer track for a long while (it’d been hanging around in one form or another since before Open Sky..)

It’s got a distinctly Caribbean feel to the chorus, which may have come from listening to mid era Grateful Dead around the time of writing! It was one of those tracks that kept popping into my head, so I took the bull by the horns and finished it! Certainly one of the more “pop” tracks on the record."

Under Water/Dry As A Bone:

"Sticking these two together as they segue into each other and thematically are pretty similar - Under Water was written after a short period of feeling “under the weather”. Pretty apt for the way the world is feeling right now..! I had the chorus first for this and was pretty pleased with the outcome!

Into Dry as a Bone. Ok, its another whinge.. This is basically about the dirge of the day to day jobs we all have to do (unless you’re very lucky) - So, please buy the albums, so I don’t have to do things I don’t want !! :)

Pretty riff heavy monster this, went back to my rock roots fully here."

Get By

"My favourite song on this album currently (that changes daily, but it’s this at the time of writing)

In fact, this could potentially be a single at some stage as it has a very pertinent chorus for these crazy times, even though it was written in the summer last year! I was really pleased with the change from a minor key verse into a very major key singalong chorus!"

Thinking About It:

"One of only a couple of down tempo tracks on the album - bit of a Floydy vibe to this to chill you out for “side 2”

Lyrically approaches the theme of contemplating doing all the things that I’ve thought about doing, but not actually getting around to doing them! Another familiar theme for a lot of people :)

Have been getting into synthesis lately and this is a great track to play around with sonics and lush synth pads :)"

Tell Me What To Say:

"Unusually an 80’s vibe to this. I was never a huge fan of the synth pop movement in the 80’s - it all sounded too unreal and not organic enough for me. I always preferred to hear the human element in recorded music (mistakes and all!)

Having said that, there are some classic examples of when it works - particularly in the mid 80’s output of bands like Talk Talk, although they became one of the most organic sounding bands in history in the late 80’s with the sublime Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock, their early stuff is very synth based and very clever."

Can I Go Now?

"I like this one! Pretty much two different songs welded together with string and superglue.Pleased with how it came out though - bit of a nod to Progressive rock time signatures, but I wanted to keep it fairly concise :)

Another one with the vague theme of futile working towards an ever moving goal.. Bit gloomy but hey, it’s not all roses and puppies out there!"

Funny How It Is

"Onto a much cheerier track! This is a bit of a good time romp with dumb but fun guitar chords leading the way! Also contains one of the bounciest guitar solo’s I’ve played in a while.

Written about looking back on previous musical ventures (the old band) and probably unconsciously appeared in my mind after doing the Time Capsule project."

Morning News:

"This is the newest track on the album, written in January this year.

I try not to get social/political in my lyrics but this is the closest I’ve got to a commentary on the state of the world currently.  Let’s see if you can guess who the “Crazy guy” is? Musically, I’m really proud of this one and the song came together very quickly, which is always nice :)"

Any Time:

"Finally, this is the oldest track on the record. This has been kicking around since the Secret Art record from 2017. It’s a bit of a departure sonically from the rest of the album but I think it sits nicely at the end to bliss you out :)

Lyrically dealing with the loss of loved ones over the years and the knowledge that they are still with us in some form or other."

A reminder that you can listen to and buy the album here.

I Don't Hear A Single Albums Of The Year 2019 : 71- 80

It's been difficult to get these choices down to 100. I'm also not a believer in saying one album is better than another. Most of the time you are comparing Apples To Oranges. I'm not a List person, I just think what's the point.

However, for the last couple of years I have compiled Best Of 2019, normally I just said what my favourite album of the year is. I've done it again, because these posts seem so popular and the aim of this Blog is to get exposure (and Sales) for the artists.

There is no meaning or judgement on an album that is Number 1, Number 100 or not on the list. Anything that I review on here, mention on Social Media or play on the Radio Show is as highly recommended.

I would also add that the Top 100 includes albums available as Download Only. To suggest that they are anything less than equal to a Physical release is patently nonsense and omits many wonderful albums.

I will compile a Top 20 of Reissues and Compilations combined after all this is complete. For each album, I've posted a song from it and a link to the review, where you can find further details on how to listen or buy the album.
