The Junior League - Our Broadcast Day

The Junior League have been around for now approaching two decades. Covington Louisiana's Joe Adragna's debut album, Catchy, remains one of the great Power Pop albums of all time and that genre marked his expertise.

He has never been afraid to step away from the obvious, for instance Adventureland is a magnificent example of an 80s album, three decades on. His last album, Bridge And Tunnel, was a much more laidback affair in places and Our Broadcast Day goes the whole hog.

The Pop is still present, particularly on the jaunty, twanging The Me And Them with its great Vocal arrangement. But elsewhere, the album feels very gentle West Coast fayre. It remains very melodic, but restrained and is a fine listen, but it may surprise long term fans.

At times, Our Broadcast Day becomes very Country, even a little Glen Campbell. This isn't Cowboy Hat, yeehaw my woman's left me Country, more beautifully written and atmospheric songs that could be Pop Rock if a stomping Guitar were added.

With this Country tinge, as you might expect, there is Americana at the edges. There are also Doolin' Dalton West Country Rock ventures. This is a beautifully arranged and performed album, every note in place.

There are two other songs worth special mention. The Piano Pop  of 1973 Nervous Breakdown is a wonderful song. Austin On The Beach is built around a killer riff and sounds more late 60s with a splendid vocal arrangement.

You can listen to and buy the album here. The CD is on the Kool Kat label and can be purchased here.

I Don't Hear A Single Albums Of The Year 2021 : 31-40

It's been difficult to get these choices down to 100. I'm also not a believer in saying one album is better than another. Most of the time you are comparing Apples To Oranges. I'm not a List person, I just think what's the point?

However, for the last few years I have compiled annual Best Of 's  because these posts seem so popular and the aim of this Blog is to get exposure (and Sales) for the artists. There is no meaning or judgement on an album that is Number 1, Number 100 or not on the list. Anything that I review on here, mention on Social Media or play on the Radio Show is as highly recommended.

There are few rules. All albums have to have been reviewed on IDHAS. Reissues and Live Albums are not included. Previously unreleased albums are included, but Best Of's are not. For each album, I've posted a song from it and a link to the IDHAS Review where you can find further details and how to listen or buy the album.

The Junior League - Bridge And Tunnel

It's hard to believe that it is over 15 years since The Junior League's Catchy, an album that I never fail to rabbit on about. Thankfully Joe Adragna is still around and just as great. His last album, Adventureland, was in the IDHAS Top 10 albums of 2019.

So, I would expect nothing but ace for Bridge And Tunnel, Adragna has set high standards career wise and that bar keeps getting higher and higher. This album sounds less 80s than Adventureland, although the odd keyboard run still reminds me of that decade.

Generally, the mood is really laid back, Adragna's voice does lend itself to that mode, but there is still plenty of variety. Not My Time even hits the smooth soul of the second half of the 70s and Storyteller channels Tom Petty as one track per album seems to. It is wonderfully moody.

Turn Off The Lights is great late 60s / early 70s trippy Pop Rock and The Sunshine Saves Everyone is fine West Coast Pop Rock, maybe a bit Yacht Rock-ish with a great twang. Library Bar reminds me of those great UK Pop Rock acts of the 70s, Jigsaw, Liverpool Express etc.

54 has a haunting Duane Eddy twang on a song that comes across as a sort of American latter day 10CC. Lirr is a greater departure with its meandering strings. Special Mention though should go to Andrea (You Can't Fly), a real soap box Psych Pop surprise. Beautifully produced and played, Bridge And Tunnel pushes all the right buttons. Gentle but magnificent!

You can listen to and buy the album here.

The Junior League - Adventureland

Any album from Joe Adragna's The Junior League is worth the admission, but Adventureland is a revelation. 2005's Debut Album, Catchy, remains in my Top 10 Power Pop albums of the 21st Century and this sounds every bit as good and could well be better.

The 80's is a decade that I like to beat about the head with a wet fish. But when you hear an album like this, you remember that there was some great Guitar Pop amongst the make up and Casio keyboards. If it were the 80's, this album would sell oodles.

From the opener Heavy with it's Tom Petty Teen Flick Film Soundtrack feel to the closing rock out, Adventureland At Night. this one joy of an album. 10 songs, 28 minutes, say what you've gotta say and move. So good that you can play the album twice in an hour.

Have Faith In Yourself could be on ELO's Time album with it's The Cars like synth run. Everybody Wants To Play is a rocked up version of The Knack. Town In A Box just doesn't let up and The Buggles like backing on the splendid Falling In Love rounds of an absolute gem of a song.

No More is US New Wave Punk at it's best. Most of these songs could have been on an 80's Teen Movie, all ten could be singles. It really looks like Power Pop is back and without doubt, Adventureland is a contender for IDHAS's Album Of The Year. This album just doesn't settle down  for one moment. This is simply poptastic!

You can listen to and buy the download here.  The CD is on Ray Gianchetti's top notch Kool Kat label here.
