Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - And Now For The Whatchamacallit

There seems something more poppy than the Psychedelic Porn Crumpets' previous two albums here and as such it is a wonderful listen. It isn't commercial enough to be Psych Pop, but the album feels more like a Psychedelic Carnival.

The Australian Quartet have conjured up a splendid affair that will appeal to music fans who are not that enamoured with the direction that Tame Impala have taken or remain less than convinced about the Emperor's New Clothes that are King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard.

That's not to say that they've lost their Psych chops, particularly on Native Tongue. Social Candy probably best sums up the album best with is Psychedelic Glam Rock. When In Rome has an ever bigger Glam Riff, it is completely hypnotic, bordering on Space Rock.

Digital Hunger could be a Soft Machine instrumental and Dezi's Adventure is a wonderfully deeper slab of Psych. Fans of both parts of High Visceral may be a little disappointed as the depth and focus isn't present here. Personally I love it.

This is the sound of an inventive band having fun. And Now For The Whatchamacallit feels more commercial, as commercial as you can be and still have your feet in the Psychedelic camp. As for doubters, the lead up singles will have given you more than a heads up of the forthcoming direction.

It is those singles that will appeal most to new listeners. Bill's Mandolin again has that Glam Rock feel with its killer riff, Hymn For A Droid is an in your face cracker and the aforementioned Dezi's Adventure may be the best thing on the album. The whole album is incredibly inventive, particularly foot tapping which is unusual for the genre. The whole 33 minutes is outstanding.

You can buy the album everywhere.

  1. I found these guys a little bit earlier this year and couldn't agree more with your synopsis. They're the way I'd have hoped Tame Impala would have gone, but maybe cooler?
