I Don't Hear A Single Book Reviews

In four and a half years of I Don't Hear A Single, I'd never been asked if I review Books, yet over the past few weeks I've been asked the question on four occasions and so I thought why not? I do read a fair bit, not as much as the female half of the dynamic duo, but more than enough.

I largely read History and Music stuff and for here, it would obviously be Music, Fiction or Non Fiction. I wouldn't want to move the emphasis away too much from what IDHAS does which is Album Reviews, but my Bumper Book Of Proverbs tells me a change is as good as doing the same thing, I think.

So we'll try one per month. If the interest is greater, I can extend it to more and if there is any month without a submission, I'll re-read or cover one of my own purchases. I'm happy to receive ebook or physical copies. If ebook is the format, pdf is preferred as the format is easily readable device to device.

I already have the first submitted, so we'll call that a delayed January Review and try and get two done this month. I get all the Music Magazines, but have to say bar a few exceptions, must are really dull these days. You'd think new music doesn't exist.

Dropkick - Turning Circles + bonus disc (Rock Indiana Records Spain) 2020      $18

The 2020 reissue of Dropkick’s 2007 album “Turning Circles” comes as an expanded CD.  This was the first album the Andrew/Alastair/Roy/Stu line up made before “Dot the I” and “Patchwork” albums in 2008, and definitely was one of the most fun and prolific periods of the band.  The original 14 track album now features an additional 10 songs recorded at that time.  The album comes with a bonus disc containing 26 extra demos and recordings that Andrew Taylor recorded in Late 2006 / Early 2007.

The Parson Red Heads - Lifetime Of Comedy (Fluff & Gravy Records) 2021      $15

On “Lifetime of Comedy”, founder Evan Way, new guitarist Jake Smith and the rest of the band navigate new terrain, excavating the bedrock of their well-honed sound and allowing it to be remoulded into an altogether new alchemy of songcraft.  While still quintessentially a Parson Red Heads record, it’s, as Way contends, the most collaborative of their recordings to date.  If there's ever been a time to foster and encourage self-reflection, it's probably right now.

The Tummies - 9:30 Girl (Self Released) 2020     $11

Meet The Tummies: step back in a time when all you wanted was a date on Saturday night, a cool car, and a great place to hang out with your friends. This is what The Tummies are all about; Brit Pop from the 60’s like Gerry and The Pacemakers, Manfred Mann, The Rooks and early Beatles – but modernised.

I Don't Hear A Single Albums Of The Year 2020 : 11-20

It's been difficult to get these choices down to 100. I'm also not a believer in saying one album is better than another. Most of the time you are comparing Apples To Oranges. I'm not a List person, I just think what's the point.

However, for the last few years I have compiled annual Best Of 's because these posts seem so popular and the aim of this Blog is to get exposure (and Sales) for the artists. There is no meaning or judgement on an album that is Number 1, Number 100 or not on the list. Anything that I review on here, mention on Social Media or play on the Radio Show is as highly recommended.

I would also add that the Top 100 includes albums available as Download Only. To suggest that they are anything less than equal to a Physical release is grossly unfair, even more so in 2020 with all that has happened during the year. To qualify, an album has to be available for sale in any format.

For each album, I've posted a song from it and a link to where you can find further details on how to listen or buy the album.
